Book Review: Half the Field is mine

Swati Sengupta

“Half the Field is Mine” by Swati Sengupta would be the perfect book for the sports and football loving girls  who dream of becoming a football star one day. I recently bought this book at the 31 st edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair. The book is a coming of age story. The story revolves around the friendship of Oli and her domestic work’s daughter, Champa, and their love for football. Nothing can come between Oli, Champa and Football until they reach the threshold of adolescence. The boys of their neighborhood, whom they play  football with, decide that they can’t play on their team Patuli Superman renamed Patuli Men's Team.  The girls who are not ready to face this go through major events in their life in the following days. And in between all this  Champa goes missing. What has happened to Champa? Has she been kidnapped? Was it because of those boys? There are many questions that pop up in Oli’s head.  The book highlights and emphasizes  the problem of Gender inequality. The tale is about mystery, friendship and fighting for women's rights. From the gender biased Jhal muri  to the unknown world of  mixed football, the tale is truly enthralling. I would give it 9.5 out of 10 and recommend it to all the girls who have a great love for sports.
