The Name is Bond... Ruskin Bond

Image
The Blue Umbrella RUSKIN BOND     I found this among some old books. I read this book about 6 years ago, but the vivid and colourful details Ruskin Bond puts in each story makes us remember it lifelong. This one is set in Garhwal, a hill village in Uttarakahand.Binya the protagonist of this novella is like any other brave village girl. She herds cows and has a very caring elder brother . But then comes the blue umbrella with the picnickers from the outside world which she hasn't ever seen. She falls for that blue silk umbrella and is even ready to give her lucky leopard claw away for that bauble. And the rest ... well for that you have to read the book. This simple novella turns each ordinary character from the village into a hero and gives them an oppurtunity to redeem themselves.

Blue and Pink ? For What?  In today’s fast moving world, men and women should get an equal chance in everything . Why discriminate on the basis of pink and blue or girl or boy?   I would like to quote  famous actress and activist Emma Watson “I am from Britain, and I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.” Yes, she is right and every woman acquires this.   People think that women or girls are weak infront of men. They think that women should sit at home, cook, clean and look after children. Girls and boys are not equally seen. Even kids are discriminated against. They are discriminated against on the basis of blue and pink. For example , we buy fashion kits, teddy bears, dolls  or pink clothe

In the SHADOW OF THE LEAVES ANJANA  BASU      Writing after a long gap I feel a little off track. So, I read this book , "In the shadow of the leaves" by Anjana Basu in my summer holidays.       It follows around Rohan and his mother are holidaying in the Kumaon Hills. Rohan should be practicing Maths, he has failed in his exam, but he is spending time reading Jim Corbett’s Man-eaters of Kumaon and wandering in the hills with fearless Manjul, who herds cows. Rohan admires the way she jumps streams like a little cat and her knowledge of the woods.       Peace and tranquility, in the hills, is lost when they hear that a tiger has been killing cattle in the nearby villages. A mysterious man with a moustache materializes at night and seems to spellbind the children and tigers.       Rohan is convinced that it is Jim Corbett’s ghost. Manjul disagrees. Whoever the mysterious man is, he is on a mission—save the tiger from poachers and herd it back into the National Park.       The

THE HAPPY PRINCE  AND OTHER STORIES Oscar Wilde     Vacation time means book time for me and this collection of stories was a delight to me. While 2 of the stories :  Happy Prince  and The Selfish Giant   were already known to me the others were truly great .       For  example, In the story The Nightangle and the Rose, it showed the stupidity of love and to how far extants boys go to please lovers. On one part, I found the story quiet funny with the words of the scholar's lover and on the other hand it showed the touching action of the nightiangle in helping the boy please his love.     In another story, The Remarkable Rocket, It revolves around an arrogant rocket who always boasts about himself and tries to boss the people around.      The last story, Canterville Chase is a truly remarkable one and was my favourite. Its funny and also heart touching at the same time. But this one ghost story is very different from other ghost stories.I may not be able to express this myself, bu

KASHMIR !                            KASHMIR !     Deepa Aggarwal       As vacations are almost over, Everyone may have been ecstasic on going on trip or relaxing down at their home with something to read or even go to play with their friends. Me, myself back from a trip to Srinagar was both joyful and tired, both at the same time.       After my trip there, The thoughts that filled my mind of  this book that lay in my home was of stories of beautiful sceneries and all but as soon as I started reading, I realized it was not the case.  The first story in the short story collection, for example, was about a girl who loved runing and how this talent of hers helped save he neighbour, an apple trader, save his lives from the death in the hands of militants.       People there, fear of both the military forces of India and also the militants, which I myself felt on the trip there. They feel themeselves like an independent state. They consider Indians like from another countr

WHISPERS IN THE CLASSROOM VOICES ON THE FIELD Stories of school, friends and life      Just yesterday, I finished reading this book, " Whispers in the classroom,Voices on the field : Stories of school, friends and life"which I recently bought at the book fair. It was a story compilation of many authors, on the above topic, edited by Richa Jha, who herself has contributed a story, and illustrated by Priya Kurien.      The book has brought forward 31 contemporary Indian writers, all giving their share of school life. I have many favorites in this book. Many of these stories really seem familiar to me and many of the characters in the different stories can also be related to many of my classmates and schoolmates. The most fun of these were A Disobedient Girl,Warp Speed, Music to my ears,Babysitting Week, The reunion, The Invitation, The Flag fiasco, The Ugly Duckling, Midnight feast, End game and Comeback. I especially liked the warp speed because of the brother-sister love in

Who is the greatest antagonist?

Image
The Great Antagonist      Today, I am going to compare 3 antagonists from 3 different books. And they are :Nicollo Machiaveeli and John Dee, both from “The secrets of the immortal Nicholas  Flamel" series and Voldemort from The "Harry Potter" series.      Let’s start with John Dee.John Dee has been an enemy of Nicholas and    Perenelle Flamel since their time in the Sixteenth Century. He had always chased them to get the Codex for his masters, Isis and Osiris, but he didn't get it until they had finally found the legendary twins, Josh and Sophie Newman, they had searched for all the time.Working together with Niccolò Machiavelli he succeeded in bringing Josh on his side, but after being declared "utalga", he turned against his masters. He, from my point of view, is a cunning man, who can perceive people, to think in a way in which he seems good to them.     Now comes Niccolo Machiavelli. In this book, he's shown as an equally powerful magician to Dr. Joh

SHORT STORY

The Kidnap Prank      I slowly blinked my eyes open. I searched with my hands around and found my specs. Putting them slowly into their correct place or my eyes I looked around to find myself inside a room, dimly lit by a yellow bulb. It was covered with hay stacks and sacks of soda cans. I soon realized it to be the store room at the back of Farmer John’s Farm, only a little away from the town. I searched my pockets for my mobile phone and that’s when I realized it was missing. And only then I found out that my brand new blue shoes were stained with dirt. They were my birthday gifts from Sofia. What will I tell her? But how to get out of here first. I walked towards the door with a switch beside it, which I assumed to be the bulb’s , and reached for the handle and then the light went off and the door opened. A huge tall man entered and with a swift move pushed me into a haystack. I tried to get up and then a thought came to me. If I tried to fight the man physically I would lose but
